Words

Words are fascinating things.

I love them.

Words have the power to capture and communicate intangible thoughts, ideas, and feelings.

Words are endless combinations of 26 little squiggles that contain and convey wisdom and knowledge.

I love the look of words. I love understanding their functions in sentences. I even love diagramming sentences.

I love figuring out how words all work together to create mood and nuance.

I love how each writer uses words in his or her own unique way, producing an individual, identifiable style.

But words are also frustrating.

By their very nature, words limit.

How can you assign all the complexities of feeling and emotion to a single word?

Love, Hate, Kindness, Envy, Purity, Anger, Compassion...

Each of these words means something entirely different to every person who has ever lived. We've each had widely varying experiences involving these words.

How can a single sound, a finite group of letters, capture depth of feeling, passion, soul?

It's impossible.

But until we discover a way to connect with the wordless qualities of another's heart, words will have to do.

Words are magic keys that allow us a tantalizing glimpse through the crack in the door of humanity's soul.
